ISO 22000 Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS)

Failures in the food supply can be dangerous and result in costly litigation. ISO 22000 is intended to provide security by ensuring that there are no weak links in the food safety chain. The recent issue of the FDIS ISO Standard for Food Safety Management Systems has been recognized as an initiative to introduce globally recognized standards

of Food Sector requirements and whilst accreditation schemes for Certification Bodies for this are still being developed AJA Registrars have committed to, and will be participating in, a UKAS pilot programme with the intention of achieving accreditation for the provision of ISO 22000 certification services.

ISO 22000 specifies requirements for a food safety management system in the food chain where an organisation:

- needs to demonstrate its ability to control food safety hazards in order to consistently provide safe end products that meet both customer and food safety regulatory requirements;

-aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the control of food safety hazards;

ISO 22000 may apply to all types of organisations in the food chain from feed producers, food manufacturers, transport and storage operators, retail and food service outlets subcontractors and even organisations such as producers of food processing equipment, packaging materials, cleaning agents, additives and ingredients.
