FAQ – ISO 9001:2008

1) ISO 9001:2008 was released last November 15, 2008 what are the new requirements within the standards?

ISO 90001:2008 does not contain any new requirements , as per the joint communiqué released by ISO and the IAF (International Accreditation Forum).

You may refer to the pdf file of the communiqué below It only introduces clarifications to the exiting requirements of ISO 9001:2000 based on eight years of experience of implementing the standard.

There are revisions but these merely clarify the requirements of each clause- there are words added and/or deleted, sentences and paragraphs re-constructed into a more active tense formats and notes are also added to further clarify the particular clauses.

It also introduces changes intended to improve consistency with ISO 1400:2004. The clarifications are in the form of new/revised notes

2) How do I know what are the specific changes?

Technical Committee 176, (the technical body mandated to review ISO 9001, every 5 years or so and institute changes if and when necessary) have made it easier for users to determine the specific changes.

The new standard has an annex (ANNEX B) dedicated to describing the changes between the 2000 and 2008 version of ISO 9001.

3) What are the timelines for transition?

As per the joint communiqué of ISO and the IAF, One year after publication – November 15, 2009, all accredited certifications, (new or re-certifications) shall be to ISO 9001:2008.

This means that certification bodies can no longer issue certificates to the 2000 version by November 15, 2009.

Twenty four months after publication – November 15, 2010, any existing certification issued to ISSO 9001:2000 shall not be valid.

4) If there are no new requirements why can’t my existing ISO 9001:2000 certificate just be “swapped” for the 2008 version?

As per the joint communiqué of ISO and IAF, certification of conformity to ISO 9001:2008 SHALL ONLY BE ISSUED AFTER a routine surveillance or re-certification audit against ISO 9001:2008.

This means that a “transition” can and should be done as part of an existing surveillance or re-certification audit between now and November 2010.

5) Can we request for a “transition” before our scheduled surveillance?

Yes, should a company wish, a “special” Document review can be performed outside of your existing schedule to facilitate transition.

6) What are the costs involved?

If the transition is conducted during a re-certification audit then there is no additional cost involved. If the transition is conducted during a regular surveillance audit, the only additional cost is the fees for the processing of the new certificate (certificate adjustment fee).

If the transition is conducted outside of the scheduled surveillance, the fees involved would be for the manday for the document review and the certificate adjustment fees.

Clients are therefore encouraged to transition during the regular re-certification or surveillance schedule. Clients are also encouraged to transition “sooner than later”.

For request for proposal of cost kindly download the questionnaire (Click Here: Questionnaire) and fax it to us at +632.850.22.08
